This year the theme for the Alabama Association for Gifted Children's Gifted Education Month and state conference are themed "Igniting Gifted Potential". The symbolism of igniting, lighting a fire of curiosity in our youth is one that we are incorporating into our projects and activities. Many students will be using these symbols in the art and video contest. Last week in perfect congruence with our theme, Jan Mattingly of Dynamic Education Adventures brought her traveling science show to Mr. Melton's four elementary schools. In partnership with teachers, many other high performing kids were able to participate as well, reaching over 100 kids in the week! The program called "Explosive Experiments" was exciting for kids, mainly because Jan was lighting things on fire and making small, loud, explosions. Despite the high levels of engagement students were LEARNING important science concepts such as the physical properties of matter and the difference between a chemical and physical reaction. She asked questions of students throughout and was getting their critical thinking fired up (pardon the pun) between explosions.
Now, when kids are yelling at you to do some science experiments for them, you've got them hooked. The BCS Gate program is incredibly grateful for Miss Jan and her explosion program, along with others she has done throughout the district. Thanks also to Mr. Melton for scheduling shows and sharing the program at schools.
Oh, and the kids were not at all happy when Jan lit that dollar bill on fire but were relieved and curious when it escaped the fire unscathed. If you'd like to learn more about Dynamic Education Adventures, please visit the website Here.
